The importance of practicing gratitude on our journey of faith

A grateful heart
is an open window
that allows the whole house
to be filled
with fresh air.

Just unlock
and lift…
let the breeze love you.

In our humanity, we tend to get mad or drift away and stop helping others, when we don’t feel appreciated. God’s not like us. He blows graces into our lives like breezes, freely and constantly, whether we deserve them or not. Generosity is who He is.

When we’re traveling through life with God, He’s going to do amazing things for us that we don’t deserve or expect and give us blessings that are remarkable beyond our expectations.

The question is: will we even notice the wonderful things God does for us? While He’s taking us on an adventurous ride, will we be too focused on the bumpy road to notice the sunset He planned especially for us to see? When he places new friends in our path, will think we’re too busy to slow down and get to know them?

To embrace and experience the graces God has for us, we need to open the window of our hearts with gratitude. Here are a few ways:

  • Keep a journal of a few things you’re grateful for at the end of each day
  • Send thank you notes when people do nice things for you
  • Tell the people you love how much you appreciate them
  • Say thank you to waitresses, grocery store clerks, dentists and other helpers in your daily lives
  • Stop complaining
  • Simply pay attention to the beauty of nature, the feeling of good health, things that make you laugh, favorite books and people you love!

It’s an act of faith to focus on the positive aspects of life. No matter what challenges we face, there is always something to be grateful for. Hellen Keller said “So much has been given to me; I have no time to ponder over that which has been denied.” Clearly, she could have spent her life wallowing in self pity, due to the challenges of being deaf, blind and mute. Instead, with her grateful heart, she inspired us all with a life of courage and grace.

Prayer for a grateful heart

Lord, open my heart to see and experience the blessings you have for me. Give me the grace and discipline to truly appreciate all the wonderful things you do for me, so I can experience more of your love in my life and pass it on to those, who need it most.

Spread the joy! What are you most grateful for today? Comment below, and I’ll lift you up in prayer.

  1. I’m grateful for second, third, fourth and fifth chances…lol. God is sooo good, when he should have, could have cut me off when I roamed away to do my own thing – he accepted me back, not just once but quite a few times and for that – I’m grateful! No matter how hard the flesh wants to do it’s thing – my spiritual man is hungry to stay on this path – while God is merciful, I don’t ever want to take him for granted. Beautiful Post!
