Encouragement to Guard Your Heart

Your heart

is the only home you have

to welcome God.

Don’t let anything but Love inside …

The tiniest fear can start a fire

that burns the whole place down.

Before you know it,

jealousy will rob you blind.

Bitterness will poison in the air, and

when resentment floods the basement,

you won’t have the patience to entertain

the gentle King,

who wants to bring you sweet peace

and more grace

than you ever dreamed of.

Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

1 Corinthians: 13 4-8 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

1 Peter 5:8 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

In the same way that we need to watch what we eat in order to be physically healthy, we  need to watch what we believe in order to be spiritually healthy. Often without realizing it, a jealousy, fear or bitter thought can sneak into our heart – robbing us of peace and limiting our ability to do Christ’s work in the world.

Today, I encourage you to spend some time in prayer, tuning into your heart space and rooting out any negativity that is limiting your capacity to embrace God’s love.

God, give us the grace to welcome the fullness of Your Holy Spirit in our hearts. Protect us from the temptation to fear, bitterness, jealousy, selfishness and despair. Instead, fill our hearts with the fruits of your spirit, which are joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Help us understand the importance of guarding our hearts from all negativity, so more of Your Love can flow through us into the world. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
