Spiritual Journey: When the rug gets pulled out from beneath you

I am rising up beneath you,
I am cushioning your fall.

I am lifting off your burdens,
I am filling you with love.

I am welling up inside you
like a warm familiar song.

I am wrapping you in angels –
I am holding you so close.

I am whispering my secrets,
I am shining in the dark.

I am running up to greet you,
I am blowing in the wind.

I am gathering in the rain-clouds,
I am glowing in the sun.

I am wrapping you in kindness,
I am holding you so close.

I am filling you with my love, and
I’m fighting hard for yours.

I am welling up inside you
like a fountain of pure light.

I am building you an army,
I am making all things right.

I am rising in the distance,
I am bearing in the tide.

I am healing all your wounds now,
I am building a new life.

Exodus 14:14 “The Lord will fight for you, you need only be still.”

Today, the Majesty of God is surrounding me. There is no way that I can help myself to prepare better. I am thoroughly enwrapped in God. My soul is being inflamed by His love. I only know that I love and am loved. That is enough for me. I am trying my best to be faithful throughout the day to the Holy Spirit and to fulfill His demands. I am trying my best for interior silence in order to be able to hear His voice…” – St. Faustina Kowalski’s Diary 1828

Matthew 7 24-27 24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

1 Corinthians 3 11-13 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—13 each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.

Hebrews 11:10 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

Lately, as the rug has been pulled out from beneath me a bit in life, I have been challenged to reconnect to the reassuring presence of the Lord within through the extra stress and challenges. In prayer, I was blessed with a strong sense of the Lord telling me that it’s impossible to have the rug pulled out from beneath me because He Himself – our unchanging Heavenly Father – is the very ground of our being. When the rug gets pulled out, it can only reveal more of His grace, His goodness, His strong foundation – His very presence. As the rug is pulled out from beneath us, He rises up from beneath us to cushion our fall and reveal His presence in a myriad of ways. He heals us. He delivers us from evil. He provides for us. He draws us ever more deeply into union with Himself, as we are willing to seek Him and cooperate with grace.

This poem is the fruit of my listening to that sense of comfort, which is given to us by the Holy Spirit in prayer. In my mind – I hear it in my mind as a song with a very gentle, soothing melody, which keeps playing over and over in my head and brings peace to my soul. My hope is that it can bring peace to others as well.

I’ve built my life on listening and doing my best to follow that still small voice, but it can be hard to hear sometimes through the stress and pressures and struggles of life.

Are you able to feel the comforting presence of the Lord through your times of stress and strain? How are you working to build your life on a strong foundation of the Holy Spirit?

Lord give us the grace to hear your voice in all the ways you are present with us in good times and in bad. Through scripture, each other, prayer, the cries of the poor and community – please Lord give us the grace to be truly connected and ever closer in union with You, that we may truly build our lives on the only strong foundation – Your presence in our lives. In Jesus name, we pray.
