Friends are like angels with pants on,
who have the power to show up in ways we can see.
Friends are God’s way of reminding us
that His love really is with us,
even when the prayer thing
isn’t working out the way we hoped.
Saint Thomas Aquinas said “There is nothing on this earth to be prized more than true friendship,” and I agree wholeheartedly.
No matter how much faith we have, life is hard. We all need trustworthy people to walk by our sides through the ups and downs we face, celebrating our successes, showing compassion for our struggles, and encouraging us to keep going. True friends can be hard to find, and if we’re lucky enough to have them, we should cherish and appreciate them as the gifts from God they are.
In John 15 12-15, Jesus teaches us how to be good friends. He said “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
Today, I encourage you to look for opportunities to love like Jesus loves. What small sacrifice can you make for a friend to lighten her load? Can you take a moment to text an encouraging word to someone you care about, who’s going through a hard time? Can you make a loved ones day by telling her how much she really means to you or surprising her with some kind of practical help like watching her kids or making her dinner?
Thank you God for the gift of true friends, who are there to celebrate with us in good times and walk with us through hard times. Give us the grace to be true and faithful friends to others, and bless those, who are longing for a true friend to find a loving, supportive faith community. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
